Many of us are well versed on the benefits of breastfeeding for babies. It helps build their immune system, is easy to digest, reduces the risk of type II diabetes and childhood obesity, may reduce the risk of SIDS – and the list goes on. But what is in it for Mom? Does breastfeeding have to be all about the baby?
Absolutely not – breastfeeding is fantastic for moms as well as their babies, and often moms need to know that there is something in it for them. Not because they are selfish, not because their babies needs are not important but because breastfeeding is a big commitment and isn’t always easy.
So moms – here is what breastfeeding has to offer you:
- Reduced risk of breast cancer by almost 50% compared to women who do not breastfeed
- Reduced risk of uterine cancer and ovarian cancer
- Reduced risk of osteoporosis
- Faster recovery postpartum anemia
Still not convinced? Breastfeeding may reduce mom’s risk of experiencing post partum depression and can also promote emotional health. It delays the return of the menstrual cycle and helps the uterus shrink back to its pre-pregnancy size.
Finally, a few of my personal favorites that may help inspire you when the going gets tough:
Breastfeeding is FREE, burns a lot of extra calories helping with post partum weight loss and is environmentally friendly.
Happy nursing!
