I’m often asked the same series of questions about acupuncture, so I’ll share them, and their answers, here to help introduce this amazing healing method to you:
What is Acupuncture?
According to Traditional Chinese theory, there are acupuncture meridians which flow throughout the body. These meridians connect the surface of the skin to the internal organs and musculature. Within these meridians flow energy, or chi. When there is trauma or disease, obstructions to these meridians cause pain and discomfort. Acupuncture works by inserting fine, disposable, sterile needles into specific predetermined points to help free these obstructions. This allows the chi to flow smoothly, thus decreasing pain and improving the quality and efficiency of life.
Does Acupuncture Hurt?
This is the biggest misconception about acupuncture! No, it doesn’t hurt for an overwhelming majority of patients. In rare instances, you may feel a subtle buzz, similar to that of a mosquito bite. The buzz will go away as quickly as it came. If you experience this, be sure to alert me or your acupuncturist so it can be addressed immediately.
Many people believe that the acupuncture needles will feel like you are getting a shot at the doctor’s office. This is not true at all. The needles used in acupuncture are fine, and most people don’t even feel them.
Also, there are several methods of acupuncture that do not involve needles! If you are traumatically afraid of needles, but still believe you can benefit from this healing method, please speak to me about alternatives to needles.
How Often Do I Need to be Treated?
That depends on how well you respond to the treatment. My goals for treatment are to return you to your optimum health and vitality and keep you there. Some people are “stuck in a torrential downpour,” as I like to describe it. It is necessary to “clear the clouds” and find the health that is already there, but not manifesting itself because of the rain. You may need treatments 2-3 times per week initially, but soon you will only need maintenance treatments every 1-3 months. It varies depending upon your health status at the time you begin treatments.
